The Korean War started because North Korea did not like the fact that South Korea was being supported by the United States and that South Korea is now a democracy. Kim Ill Sung traveled to Moscow and had Stalin's support to invade South Korea under his authority but Stalin didn't want to get directly into his plans and called it off. Stalin advised Kim to go and speak with China to ask for their support, and on May 1950 Kim went to China earning Mao's support. The fourteen days after earning support from Mao, the North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel marking the start of the Korean War.
